FCM’s Commitment to Equity
FCM strives to be a community that reflects the diversity in the world around us. We aim to establish a community that is diverse along various dimensions—including race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, socioeconomic status, disability, religion, and family structure. Diversity enriches our community and benefits everyone at our school.
Pursuing diversity, however, is not enough. FCM strives to be an inclusive community where every child, family, and staff member feels valued and respected. We recognize that unfair biases, including unconscious and structural biases, exist throughout society. Despite the best of intentions, our school is no exception. We are therefore committed to the ongoing work of dismantling biases and creating equitable experiences for every member of our community.
FCM’s efforts on diversity, equity, and inclusion align with our school’s overarching goal of creating an environment where children thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. These efforts are also consonant with our mission to provide an excellent Montessori education. Dr. Maria Montessori viewed her pedagogy as a means for fostering a more just and peaceful world. Dr. Montessori herself broke gender barriers as a pioneering woman in male-dominated educational and professional settings. Her early work focused on serving underprivileged children and children with disabilities. Dr. Montessori’s philosophy and work serve as an inspiration for FCM’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
